Getting Started
How do I enable the TextTap keyboard?
After installing the app, you need to enable the keyboard in iOS Settings:
- Open the TextTap app and tap "Open Settings"
- Navigate to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards
- Tap "Add New Keyboard"
- Select "TextTap" from the list
No special permissions needed. TextTap works without requiring "Allow Full Access" because all your templates are stored securely in a shared container between the app and keyboard.
Creating your first template
Templates are reusable text snippets you can insert anywhere:
- Open the TextTap app
- Tap the "+" button in the top right
- Enter a descriptive title (e.g., "Work Email")
- Add your template content
- Optionally assign a category and add tags
- Tap the checkmark to save
Using the Keyboard
Switching to the TextTap keyboard
You can access your templates from any app with a text field:
- Tap in any text field to show the keyboard
- Tap and hold the globe icon (🌐) at the bottom left
- Select "TextTap" from the keyboard list
Alternatively, tap the globe icon multiple times to cycle through your keyboards until TextTap appears.
Inserting templates
Once the TextTap keyboard is active:
- Browse your templates by scrolling
- Use the search bar to find specific templates
- Tap any template to insert it at the cursor position
- Favorites appear at the top for quick access
Searching templates
The keyboard includes a powerful search feature that filters templates in real-time as you type. Search works across template titles, content, and tags to help you find exactly what you need.
Managing Templates
Organizing with categories
Categories help keep related templates together:
- Assign categories when creating or editing templates
- Create custom categories with unique colors
- Default categories: Personal, Work, Finance, Travel, Health
- Color coding makes templates easy to spot
Using tags
Tags are searchable keywords that help you find templates quickly. Add multiple tags to each template—for example, a customer service response might have tags like "support", "email", and "greeting".
Marking favorites
Swipe left on any template in the app and tap the star icon to mark it as a favorite. Favorites appear at the top of your keyboard for instant access to your most-used templates.
Editing and deleting
To edit a template, tap it in the template list. To delete, swipe left and tap the delete button. Changes sync instantly to the keyboard.
Troubleshooting
Templates not appearing in keyboard
If your templates aren't showing up:
- Make sure you've added the keyboard in Settings → Keyboards
- Force quit and reopen the app where you're typing
- Restart your iPhone
- Check that templates exist in the main TextTap app
Keyboard performance issues
iOS limits keyboard memory usage to about 50MB. If the keyboard feels slow:
- Delete unused templates
- Shorten very long templates
- Restart your device to clear memory
Keyboard not appearing in Settings
The TextTap keyboard only appears in iOS Settings after you've opened the app at least once. If it's still missing, try reinstalling the app.
Search not working
If search isn't working, try restarting the keyboard by switching to another keyboard and back to TextTap. If the issue persists, restart your device.
Privacy & Security
How does TextTap protect my privacy?
TextTap is designed with privacy as a core principle:
Your data is safe. TextTap never sends data over the network, tracks what you type, shares data with third parties, collects analytics, or stores data in the cloud.
Where is my data stored?
All templates are stored locally on your device using Apple's secure App Groups storage. This allows the main app and keyboard to share your templates without requiring special permissions or network access.
Does the keyboard need "Full Access"?
No. TextTap works perfectly without "Allow Full Access" because it uses App Groups to securely share templates between the main app and keyboard extension. You never need to grant this permission.
Backing up templates
Currently, templates are only stored locally on your device. If you delete the app or reset your device, your templates will be lost. We recommend keeping copies of important templates in another location until cloud sync is added in a future update.
